Thanks to the traditional hospitality of its inhabitants – and because many of the valley’s residents have found their soulmates amongst the local beauty ;) – it is known to all as the “Village of Love”. This charming village is situated in a sunny spot at the entrance to the Val Genova, on the southern slopes of Cima Lancia (2,317 m). It seems that its name derives from the name of the Carice, a plant that grew abundantly in the area. Near the village, atop the cliff overlooking the Sarca, stands the ancient church of St Stephen. It existed in 1368 and was rebuilt in the 16th century. On the south wall are the famous frescoes depicting the life of St Stephen, the Dance of Death and the Seven Deadly Sins, painted by Simone Baschenis in 1519. Perched on a cliff on the southern slopes of Cima Lancia stands the distinctive little church of St Martin, of medieval origin and looked after by a hermit until 1850. From Carisolo, the road winds its way up the Val Genova; the initial stretch lies within the municipal boundaries, continuing until just before the picturesque Nàrdis waterfalls. The Carisolo Chestnut Grove, restored in 2009, was described with admiration as early as 1673 by Michelangelo Mariani, the historian of the Council of Trent. This chestnut forest played a vital role in the economy of the area’s ancient inhabitants.
